DEPERSONALIZATION
2017-2018, Performance
Depersonalization aims to visually embody the uneasy and alien feeling of intense disconnection from oneself and one's surroundings by presenting the viewer with a vague scene of personal but ultimately futile effort. Much like the realization that you are lucid dreaming, during the experience of dissconnection nothing feels real, nothing feels relevant, and the hyper awareness of yourself and your surroundings does nothing but widen the dissonance between reality, self-identity, and the pointlessness of your efforts. In this scene, the artist sits on a white chair at a white draped table, writing with white ink in a white journal. The artist wears all white, including body paint and white contact lenses. They do not speak, and they offer no more than a simple head nod to individuals seeking an interaction or reaction. They remain completely engrossed in the act of writing, even though their actions leave behind only white ink on white paper, garnering nothing to be read but faint imprints on the pages.
